After reluctantly agreeing to buy Hillary a car of her own, Dave and Vicky keep her busy running errands all the time through a car contract.
The show depicts the daily lives of Dave and Vicky and their three children, Hillary, Larry, and Mike, on Long Island, New York, dealing with normal family issues. He is often portrayed as insensitive and cynical, and sometimes as a paranoid, overprotective and hypocritical bigot. Dave is constantly scolded and insulted by Larry for always picking on him. It is established toward the end of season one that Dave is the way he is because he had a father who constantly badgered him. Dave's wife Vicky is an attractive Italian-American Catholic part-time receptionist at a doctors' office. Generally levelheaded, she usually spends her time dealing with Dave's unreasonable behavior, but can be quite obnoxious herself.

The family struggles to adjust to Vicky's new job, which leaves her with less hours to be at home and more hours working. Dave and Larry continue to have tough time trying to do the things Vicky normally does. Dave's temper doesn't help and makes matters worse when Mike and Hillary end up in trouble. Meanwhile, the changes around the office force Vicky to think twice about her decision.
Kenny and his boyfriend are barred from attending the Sadie Hawkins dance. When Dave protests, Principal Fink learns Kenny is living with the Golds and threatens to notify child services. Second oldest is 16-year-old Larry , an odd misfit given to emotional outbursts . Initially Dave believes that the boys are both gay, but it is later revealed to the audience that while Larry is not gay, Kenny has a secret crush on Larry. Dave, and to a lesser extent Vicky, often treat Larry's flamboyancy with wary eyes. The youngest child, the pubescent 14-year-old Mike , must deal with issues such as masturbation, dating and underage gambling.

Kenny confronts Dave after hearing that he thinks he's gay, and ends up coming out of the closet to him. Dave suggests to him that he tell his parents, but when Kenny tells them, they kick him out of the house. Meanwhile, Hillary goes on a date with a blind guy she met at the coffeehouse, but she quickly gets tired of having to describe everything to him. Dave starts to put pressure on Hillary for her to do well on her college admissions interview by setting up mock interviews, which only makes her even more nervous. Meanwhile, Vicky organizes a movie night for the family, and they end up watching Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. Finding the film very profound, Dave forces the entire family to live in an eco-friendly existence, but takes things too far.

Money crunch time hits Dave's household and he places the kids under strict allowance, which prompts them to come up with ways of making more money. When Vicki wants new boots, she gives Dave a taste of his own medicine with cheaper beer. Kenny becomes a member of the family, while Dave fights to get into a new office after a fellow co-worker suddenly passes.

Meanwhile, Dave angles for the corner office at work. Vicky signs up for a wine-appreciation class and hopes that Dave will want to join in on the activity. Meanwhile, Larry cooks for an elderly woman, and Dave discovers Hillary's video blog. Larry and Kenny are caught in the middle when their families clash over the property line separating their yards. Meanwhile, Hillary agrees to go out with a guy Dave has handpicked. Dave decides to take a hands-off approach to parenting after catching Hillary in a lie.
Larry rejects the idea of being put on medication, much to the dismay of his parents. Dave finds a pill of his own hard to take when he finds out his daughter isn't "daddy's little girl" anymore. Vicky's plan for a living will meets with some resistance from Dave, and a bitter fight ensues, leaving the kids wondering if they'll all end up in divorce court.
Meanwhile, Larry gets hooked on Vicky's nicotine gum. Dave and Vicky encourage Hillary to apply to colleges, but she has plans to be a pop singer. Elsewhere, Dave meddles with Larry's campaign to be chess-club president. Note that if any episodes exist within other season orders, they will be retained regardless of this selection. Dave also gives Hillary advice on getting back together with her old boyfriend, which only alienates Hillary and exhilarates Dave. An all-too-familiar episode in sit-com plots, as the kids are returning to school. But when Dave and Vicky plan on re-claiming the house as their own during a quick lunch, they catch Hillary skipping and hiding out at home. Larry tries out a new personality, and Mike plans on dumping his girlfriend, which screws up Dave's plans on a friendship with the girlfriend's father.
Dave realizes how he looks when he thinks he spots his own daughter in a just-received dirty movie. Larry is prescribed medication for social anxiety but refuses to take the pills. Meanwhile, Hillary prepares for the prom, and Mike takes a fencing class. Dave is conflicted about whether he should tell Vicky's mom about her fiancé's indiscretions. Meanwhile, Kenny goes on a date with Hillary's ex-boyfriend.
Three teens cause havoc for their parents, and vice versa, in a brash family-oriented sitcom that employs a confessional space for characters to vent their meant-to-be-humorous feelings. Everything is perfect in our plan to achieve our intended goals for the Socialist Left. The series frequently breaks the fourth wall between segments of an episode, during which Dave or other characters deliver a rant or other comment directly relating to the scene. A music executive wants to meet with Larry after hearing some songs he uploaded online. Dave tries to get Larry and Mike to strengthen their relationship as brothers; Hillary tries to get a blind guy interested in her. Dave is struggling with three family crisis at a time. Vicky wants more joined activities with him, but he refuses. Mike shows Dave Hillary's video blog on which she mentions all family members except Dave. When Dave agrees to take Larry and Kenny to a comic-book convention, he finds that it goes beyond just dropping them off at the event.
The show originally received negative reviews from critics, scoring a 28 out of 100 on Metacritic and 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. Dave decides he wants to start his own company after his job lowers their commission rate. Hilary decides she wants to go into the army after not being accepted to any colleges. Hillary takes matters into her own hands when Mike goes to her in search of illegal drugs.
His character is portrayed as tougher and more cynical than Larry's. The kids return to school, and Dave meddles in Mike's romantic affairs to stay on good terms with the father of Mike's girlfriend. In other events, Hillary gets serious about school, and Larry overhauls his style. Vicky discovers it was Dave's pot and tells him to join Pot Smoker Anonymous, where the principal that suspended him is there. When Kenny comes out of the closet, Dave encourages him to tell his parents.
