The show depicts the daily lives of Dave and Vicky and their three children, Hillary, Larry, and Mike, on Long Island, New York, dealing with normal family issues. He is often portrayed as insensitive and cynical, and sometimes as a paranoid, overprotective and hypocritical bigot. Dave is constantly scolded and insulted by Larry for always picking on him. It is established toward the end of season one that Dave is the way he is because he had a father who constantly badgered him. Dave's wife Vicky is an attractive Italian-American Catholic part-time receptionist at a doctors' office. Generally levelheaded, she usually spends her time dealing with Dave's unreasonable behavior, but can be quite obnoxious herself.

The family struggles to adjust to Vicky's new job, which leaves her with less hours to be at home and more hours working. Dave and Larry continue to have tough time trying to do the things Vicky normally does. Dave's temper doesn't help and makes matters worse when Mike and Hillary end up in trouble. Meanwhile, the changes around the office force Vicky to think twice about her decision.

Kenny and his boyfriend are barred from attending the Sadie Hawkins dance. When Dave protests, Principal Fink learns Kenny is living with the Golds and threatens to notify child services. Second oldest is 16-year-old Larry , an odd misfit given to emotional outbursts . Initially Dave believes that the boys are both gay, but it is later revealed to the audience that while Larry is not gay, Kenny has a secret crush on Larry. Dave, and to a lesser extent Vicky, often treat Larry's flamboyancy with wary eyes. The youngest child, the pubescent 14-year-old Mike , must deal with issues such as masturbation, dating and underage gambling.

Kenny confronts Dave after hearing that he thinks he's gay, and ends up coming out of the closet to him. Dave suggests to him that he tell his parents, but when Kenny tells them, they kick him out of the house. Meanwhile, Hillary goes on a date with a blind guy she met at the coffeehouse, but she quickly gets tired of having to describe everything to him. Dave starts to put pressure on Hillary for her to do well on her college admissions interview by setting up mock interviews, which only makes her even more nervous. Meanwhile, Vicky organizes a movie night for the family, and they end up watching Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. Finding the film very profound, Dave forces the entire family to live in an eco-friendly existence, but takes things too far.

Meanwhile, Larry cooks for an elderly woman, and Dave discovers Hillary's video blog. Larry and Kenny are caught in the middle when their families clash over the property line separating their yards. Meanwhile, Hillary agrees to go out with a guy Dave has handpicked. Dave decides to take a hands-off approach to parenting after catching Hillary in a lie.

Larry rejects the idea of being put on medication, much to the dismay of his parents. Dave finds a pill of his own hard to take when he finds out his daughter isn't "daddy's little girl" anymore. Vicky's plan for a living will meets with some resistance from Dave, and a bitter fight ensues, leaving the kids wondering if they'll all end up in divorce court.

Meanwhile, Larry gets hooked on Vicky's nicotine gum. Dave and Vicky encourage Hillary to apply to colleges, but she has plans to be a pop singer. Larry tries out a new personality, and Mike plans on dumping his girlfriend, which screws up Dave's plans on a friendship with the girlfriend's father.

Meanwhile, Kenny goes on a date with Hillary's ex-boyfriend.

The show originally received negative reviews from critics, scoring a 28 out of 100 on Metacritic and 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. Dave decides he wants to start his own company after his job lowers their commission rate. Hilary decides she wants to go into the army after not being accepted to any colleges. Hillary takes matters into her own hands when Mike goes to her in search of illegal drugs.

His character is portrayed as tougher and more cynical than Larry's. The kids return to school, and Dave meddles in Mike's romantic affairs to stay on good terms with the father of Mike's girlfriend.
